EASTON PARK IMPROVEMENTS.
At last night’s Council meeting Mr Perreau waited on the Council, and* stated that a meeting of the Beautifying Society recommended, provided the Council raised no objection, to let the contractor for the levelling of Easton Park take a crop of oats off the ground this year, and not sow the grass seed until autumn. He said that the opinion of the Committee was that an autumn sowing of grass seed was preferable to a spring sowing, and that if the ground was cropped, as suggested, it would improve the ground. Cr. Coley stated that if we had a dry spring, in his opinion we .would find most of Easton Park going down into Johnston Street, as it was ploughed so deep. He considered that the recommendation was a fair proposition. Cr. Bryant stated.that oats would hind the ground and prevent it from blowing, whereas grass would not. It was decided that the Beautifying Society he given permission to lake a crop of oats off Easton Park, as set out in their letter, provided that the young lupins he pulled as they come through, the sowing of grass seed to he completed by the 15th March, 1922. Also that, subject to the consent of I lie adjacent properly owners being obtained, the portion of the street loading In the Park from Johnston Street he fenced off with barbed wire, six wires, and the road closed. The Mayor and Crs. Rand and Coley voted against the latter motion, which was carried. The Society's request for notice hoards was held over.
