Dunedin, July 19

Peter Johann Anderson, a school teacher at North-east Valley, was fined £4, with costs, on a charge of assaulting a pupil, Alexander Franklin Campbell. The statement showed that accused had charge of the fourth standard on the sth instant. The children had fallen into line in the usual manner, when a boy named M’Donald came along on a cycle, and a hoy named Stevens loft the ranks to let him in. Accused smacked him on the face, and in attempting to repeat the blow, Stevens ducked, with the result that Campbell was struck and knocked down, resulting in slight concussion. The defence, while pleading guilty, affirmed that the boy was not knocked down, but stumbled against a wall when he was walking away after the blow. Accused was twice wounded, and has since suffered- badly from his nerves. He had only returned to the school after a break-down when the incident occurred.
