GOATS RUE PEST.
At this week’s meeting of the Oroua. County Council, a letter was read from the Rangitikci County Council asking the council to declare goals rue a noxious weed.
Cr. Morri-on said it would he unwise for the council to come to a hasty decision in the matter. Before declaring the weed noxious they should ascertain the best: means of eradicating it. He pointed out that if a by-law were passed arequested, the noxiou- weeds inspector- and the law courts would have to pul it into action irrespective of the dilliculiic- which might he met with in il- eradication by land-holders. If was only fair to the settlers of the affected districts to consider the matter very carefully before taking any drastic action.
Cr. Campbell stressed the fact’ that if tl»e by-law were not passed it would be found that one landholder would do his best to keep down the post, whereas his neighbour would do nothing in the Platter, and thereby bring to nought the efforts of the other settler to keep the weed under control, Personally the speaker was strongly in favour of the council passing, some measure whereby the spread of goats rue could be checked. Cr Morrison explained that he was not against the measure being passed, b it merely wished to point out that the council should give the matter every consideration.
It was decided to place goats rue on the third schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act, thus enabling the council to declare the plant noxious if occasion should arise.
