HALF-HOLIDAY DEBATE.

After the conclusion of the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday night, members of the* Young Men’s Club took part in a debate on the Saturday v. Wednesday half-holiday question. The Rev. Mr Walton, on behalf of the Club, set forth the objects of the Club, and asked for the support of the Chamber on its behalf. The President of the Chamber (Mr Hornblow) welcomed the Club members, and on behalf of the Chamber said the members would be only too pleased to encourage l hem in the pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement. The debate was then opened by the Rev. Mr Walton in favour of Saturday, and he was supported by Messrs Christie, AY. Hamer, Harris, Moorhou.se, Jack Hornblow, Harkness, and Admore. Mr A. X. Smith championed Wednesday, and was supported by the Mayor (Mr Chrvstall), Messrs Bullard, Follas, and Osborne. Both leaders put up spirited replies, and on a vote being taken the Saturdayites were victorious by one vote, 13 to 12. The debate was keenly enjoyed, and some very good arguments were adduced by both parties.
