SALVATION ARMY
ADDRESS BY COLONEL FISHER
A very interesting and instructiveaddress was given by Colonel Fish.er in the Salvation Army Hall on Monday night on South Africa. Colonel Fisher was late Chief Secretary for the Army in that country, and is at present visiting New Zealand. The Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) presided, and introduced the speaker to an appreciative and representative audience. After devotional exercise, and the rendering of a selection by the small, but tuneful band, the Colonel proceeded with his address. The speaker dealt interestingly with the early history and settlement by the Dutch people, and subsequently under the British flag. The great difficulties which were associated with successful evangelistic work among such a mixture of nationalities was explained, and despite these obstacles the Army has succeeded in a remarkable manner, and is carrying on a good work amongst all classes of the South African people. The people of New Zealand, said the speaker, are to a great extent interested in this work, seeing a good proportion of the money raised by the annual Self-Denial Appeal is used in the, above connection. Many interesting little stories were related by the speaker relative to native customs, and the address was in every way interesting and instructive. The usual vote of thanks to the chair and the speaker, and the Benediction, concluded the meeting.
