BURGLARS ESCAPE.
BREAK OUT OF GAOL.
UNAVAILING SEARCH BY
POLICE
Shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, Edwin Donovan and Robert Gilmour Allen, arrested recently tinder sensational circumstances, and who were awaiting trial at the Supreme Court, broke out of the Wanganui gaol and got clean away.
At the time of their escape, which had evidently been carefully planned, the prisoners, who had been let out -of their cell just previously for exercise, were in a locked corridor. At the end nearest the railway line there is a small window covered with an iron grating. The prisoners got a spreader—a piece of heavy manuka used for a hammock —wrenched the iron grating away, broke the glass window, and escaped. The sound of breaking glass was the first untoward event to appraise the gaoler that anything was wrong, but when he got to the scene the birds had fiown. THE ESCAPEES’ ROUTE.
The escapees straightway lit out for the open country, They were seen walking smartly along Taupo Quay. They were also seen hurriedly crossing the Town Bridge, and finally they were seen to leave the No. 1 Line and strike up Durie Vale, This was the last seen of them.
The police were immediately informed of the escape, and as soon as the trail was picked up it was pursued with vigour. Since then the police net has been spread far and wide, but as yet without avail.
It is expected to-day some news will be forthcoming of the fugitives' whereabouts, as they will require to obtain food from some source.
