BUTTER AND CHEESE.
THE MARKET PROSPECTS
A leading New Zealand dairyproduce company advises its clients by circular that in view of the serious labour trouble in England it is ; ,n almost hopeless task to forecast market conditions and prices. Happily, as butter producers, we are not affected by the present slum]) in the United Kingdom, as all our butter held by the Imperial Government has been paid for at 2s (id per pound. What may be feared, however, is that perhaps this butter will not be disposed of when our new season’s make begins to appear on the Home markets. Of course, it would prejudicially affect prices for the new season’s butter if it had to be sold in competition with butter held by the Imperial Government. However, it must be hoped that the substantial reduction in prices will have the effect of placing that butter within the purchasing power of the consumer, and that when our now season’s butter arrives on the market it will do so with a clean
start. “Our London house cabled as follows :—Government prices unchanged. Danish 1955; Dutch 180 s. “As anticipated, the cheese market is slightly weaker. White is quoted at 138 s to 140 s, and coloured 152 sto 1545. Coloured appears to be coming closer to white in price, and perhaps the existing conditions in the United Kingdom have something to do with this. Perhaps the consumers of cheese, who are largely of the industrial population, may lie purchasing the cheapest cheese, irrespective of colour.”
