WATER AND DRAINAGE WORKS
ENGINEER’S REPORT
At Monday night’s Council meeting the following report was submitted by the engineer in charge of the water and drainage scheme: — “The artesian wells, —On 29th April a good flow of water was struck at Xo. 2 well, giving 88 gallons per minute at ground level, which equals 125,000 gallons per day. In conjunction with Xo. 1 well, this gives a total flow of 200.000 ; gullons per day, which is sufficient for a population of 3,000, The contractors have not as yet complied with the specification that the completed head of pipe shall be below ground surface. Sewerage.— Good progress has been made with the laying of sewer in Johnston St., the section to Coley Street being al-
most complete, and a further section leading to the Avenue having been opened. As each section of pipes is laid it is subjected to a severe smoke test, and any joints showing defects are made good. Mr Read has from 30 to 35 men on the works, and if the weather holds favourable will make short work of the balance of the deep sewers.”
