WATER AND DRAINAGE
ENGINEER’S PROGRESS REPORT.
At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the engineer’s report was read as follows: —
(1). Artesian Bores. —On 31 s( March a good flow of water was struck at No. 1 well, giving; (lo gallons per minute, or 8(5,000 gallons per day, or 48 gallons per head of population. The water is quite satisfactory in quality. The depth of pipe is 192 ft. The contractors are making good progress with the No. 2 well, which is situated four chains up the river, having driven 110 ft.
(2). Sewerage.' —About 8 chains of trench has been opened up along Union Street, the sand standing rather better than we anticipated. This portion has been opened timbered for the upper six feet. The bottom of trench just strikes the water level fortunately being very low at this season of the year. Four chains of 12-inch pipe sewer has been laid, but so far we lack an experienced pipe layer. We have, therefore, advertised in the Dominion to secure such a man, if possible. .It will be necessary to secure a No. 3 Cynild’s diaphragm pump. Two offers of second-hand pumps arc to hand, in response to advertisement —in one ease the price, £24 10s, being considerably in excess of the price of a new outlit: another, price £5 10s for pump with no hose and fittings, there is no certainty that the pump is Gould's, and that it is in good order. Our recommendation is to purchase a new pump and fittings and T. Burl for approximately £23. The Foxton Engineering Co. are constructing sheet, iron manhole centering, which will serve to build all the manholes in the system, for £32 10s od. Messrs liolben and Kirk are constructing a smoke tester for £9-4s Gd. In connection with this we shall require a 400 Buffalo blower, the lowest quote for which is £l4 10s. *
(3). Recognising that it would be advisable ty lay out the £IO,OOO installment of loan in such a manner that the works . executed may, as far as possible, be self contained and usable, we will submit a report to you next meeting dealing with this aspect.
