BOATING FATALITY
THREE NATIVES DROWNED. New Plymouth, April 1. Three Maoris were drowned and a rescue party nearly lost their lives in a boating fatality off the coast, some miles from New Plymouth to-dav.
A party of live Mauris left the coastal town of Oaonui on a lishing excursion, and in a fairly heavy swell the boat capsized, the anchor keeping the craft from righting itself. Mr Cleghorn, of Opunake, a powerful swimmer, went out in a boat with three Maoris, as a rescue •party; hut the boat capsized, and the rescuers were in danger, hut all reached the shore after exciting experiences. An eye-witness says they owe their lives to the resource and courage of Mr Cleghorn. The names of the drowned arc: —Monday Mitchell (Oaonui), Jimmy Rangi (Rnhotu), and Peepi (Normanby). There were no signs of the bodies to-night,
