VARSITY BOAT RACE
CAMBRIDGE WINS A GRUELLING CONTEST. London, March 30. Huge crowds lined the hanks of the river for tlie 'Varsity boat race. Tiie conditions were ideal, and there was scarcely a ripple on the water. Oxford, winning the loss, chose the Surrey side, and started at 35 strokes lo the minute against Cambridge's 30. At Beverley Brook Cambridge led by half a length, which wits increased to it length at Fulham football ground. At Crabtree, Cambridge had a length and a-quarter advantage, but at Hammersmith Bridge the crews were dead level. Oxford w<is rowing 30 strokes, and Cambridge 35. When half the course was covered Oxford led by a third of a length, which was increased to a length • rounding the bend, where Oxford was rowing 31 lo Cambridge's 29. At Barnes Bridge Oxford still had a slight advantage, but Cambridge, rowing strongly, drew level at the White Hart. Cambridge was ahead at the Mortlake Brewery, and won by a length after a remarkably gruelling race. Time, 19min, 44see.
