FIRE AT HAMILTON.
OCCUPANTS’ HURRIED EXIT. Hamilton, March 27. An eleven-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mrs Terry, was destroyed by fire this morning. When one of the occupants rose at o’clock there was no sign of fire, but a little later she saw- fire issuing from a cleaning cupboard on the first iloor. She immediately gave the alarm, and the occupants made their escape, many of them in their night attire. The Hamilton fire brigade was summoned, but as there was no fire-plug hartdy, aud the hose had to be carried over 1,000 ft., the building was well alight before water was played upon it, and the firemen were unable to prevent its destruction. A few articles of furniture and a few of the personal effects of the boarders were saved. The house was valued at about £1,500, and was insured for £9OO. The furniture, which was worth about £I,OOO, was not insured.
