CARNIVAL NOTES
CITIZENS’ QUEEN,
An enthusiastic meeting of the committee was held last night. Good reports were received from the vaiious snb-connnittees. The Citizens Dance to-night (dancing from 8 p.m. to 2 tun.) promises to be a huge success, and all those who have not yet bought tickets can do so from members of the committee, or at the door to-night. Look out for these notes in next issue, as the Cmmittee will have something special lo announce for Friday night, April Ist, so keep this date free. FARMERS’ QUEEN. A very large and representative meeting" of the above Committee was held in the Town Hall supperrooms last evening. It was decided to cancel the shop day for the 24th March, and hold it in Mr M. Per-' reau’s building on the 2nd April, when there promises to be a goodly amount .of produce, etc., for sale. Contributions for the shop will bo thankfully received on shop day, and will be publicly acknowledged. The arrangements -for the dance to lie held in the Town Hall on 29th inst are well in hand. This function promises to be a success. Tickets are now out, so intending patrons may obtain same from th* Committee.
A purebred Jersey heifer, valued at £ls 15s, presented by T. Jewell, Esq., was thankfully received. It was decided to raffle same by means of guessing as to what the gross proceeds of the Carnival will be. The guesses to he Is each. Cards containing particulars of the above competition, and space for guessing will be out shortly. A Subscription list, headed with £5 by Mr 11. Satherley, was instituted, and a member of the Committee was deputed to canvass supporters by means of this subscription list. NATIVE QUEEN. The Shop Day under the auspices of the Native Queen Committee held on Saturday was very successful. The various competition'; resulted: —Goose, No. 40, won by D. Christie; pig, 9 lbs., C. Morgan; sheep, 64tlbs., Miss E. Riiinner; .walking stick, corn in bottle 592, G. Tollison 013; tea 381, C. Spiers 380; doll. Mrs Gower, name “Wlmkatane"; dinner, number of beans 30], W. Bryant; weight of cake, 10:,' lbs., Mcsdamcs Benge and Satherley. The Committee wish to thank all those who in any way contributed to the success of the day, and especially Mcsdamcs Heasiuan, P. Robinson, Procter and Miss T. Heasman. FIBRE QUEEN. The Fibre Queen competitions are going well, and committeemen arc doing good business throughout the district mills, and there is no doubt the industry will be putting a big light up at the finish. SPORTS COMMITTEE’.
There will be a meeting of the Sports Stewards and Committee at the Town Hull 10-night, at 7.30. The Gala Day Sports Committee held a meeting for the purpose of drawing up a programme to take place on the Foxton racecourse on Wednesday. April bill. The programme is a very complete one, headed by a decorated procession from Main Street to the course, where there will he sports and interest for all, young and old, consisting of foot and miscellaneous events numbering sixteen, besides a great number for children only. Stewards elected for this section are Messrs Claris, Rev. Walton. V. O'Brien, A. Smith, D, Christie. Motor events number twelve, including driving competitions for ladies and gents; stewards, Messrs F. Whibley, S. Head, AY. Jewell, H. E. Hughes. There arc six horse events, including novelty races, lilting at the ring, spearing and pony and hunters’ jumping, competitions; stewards, Messrs AY. Barber, I. Woods, L. Procter, Geo. Coley, W. Smith. Tug-of-war, championship of Mamiwatu, open to industrial, trade, fanners, Maoris, sports teams; stewards, Messrs A. Stevenson, A. Smith, P. Robinson, E. J. Marlin, O. Upton. The wood-chop-ping and sawing coinpetitions should create great interest, and are a new introduction to Foxton; stewards, Messrs A\. I. Smith, J. Burr, 11. Hutchins. Sports supervisors, Messrs L. J. Fume and J,. 11. Reid. In addition to the fine sports programme, there will be on the grounds several stalls, side shows, competitions, tea rooms, ole., and altogether Gala Day should prove a very enjoyable day for the grownups and a picnic for the children from far and wide. The day will conclude with the Grand Concert, drawing of ait unions, and announcement of die winning queen in the evening. SPORTS QUEEN. All arrangements are complete for the moonlight marine excursion to be held by the Sports to-morrow evening. It only remains now for the weather prophet to be kind to make the excursion one of the social events of the Carnival campaign. Tickets on sale at ill's Walls’ lea rooms.
On.. Thursday 24th a dance and euchre party will he held in the Town Hall by the “light blues.” Dancing null be run from 8 till 12 p.m., whilst euchre players will he entertained in the supper-room. Supper will be provided by'llie lady Sports.
