WATER AND DRAINAGE.
ENGINEER’S REPORT
The following report was submitted by the Engineer to Monday night’s Council meeting on the progress of the water and drainage scheme: —
“(1.) Artesian Bores. —Messrs Brown and Rasmussen’s boring plant arrived on the 2Gth February, and commenced operations the following week at No. 1 well, close to the site of the proposed collecting water-tank. To date they have driven about 130 feet. Progress is (|uite satisfactory, “(2.) Lease from Harbour Board to Borough Council of portion of the Foxton Harbour endowment, to provide access to the outfall sewer to the river and access to the artesian wells under the river bank. On the 2Gth February we met members of the Harbour Board on the watercollecting tank site, and obtained their agreement to the position selected. Herewith we submit lease plans of the land to be included under the lease. Upon your approval of the same they should he sent forward to the Harbour Board for their consent.
(3.) Tools and Plant. —During the present month we have purchased tools for carrying out trenching for sewers. We are arranging for the construction of other plant, such as smoke tester, manhole centering, tool boxes, portable closet, cement shed.
(4.) Cement Pipes.—Our truck of 48 12-inch pipes has come to hand, and been stacked on roadside adjacent to work. One pipe rather badly chipped was rejected. Another consignment of pipes is due to arrive shortly.
“(5). Supplies of sand and shingle.—These are being obtained from Mr J. Lawrence, of Ashhurst, at 6s per cubic yard on track at Ashhurst. Delivered on works this amounts (o lGs fid (o 17s per cubic card
“((>.) We are arranging to purchase 8 ton's of cement. There lias been difficulty in getting quotations, owing to the wharf trouble. (7.) Mr Read, the foreman of works, took up his duties on 7th March, and has been taking delivery of pipes and sand, and arranging generally for the opening up of the sewer trenches.
“(8.) We expect the timber for trenches lo arrive in a week or ten days, when the work of excavation of sewer trenches will be commenced.
(0.) Closing Main Street. —It will be necessary to close Main Street from Cook Street to Union Street for a period of about 10 days lo enable the sewer to be laid across 1 Jit* junction of Main and Union Streets.
“(ID.) There have been over 50 application- for work on the trenches, the majority being residents of Foxton.”
The report was adopted, and it was decided that the plans submitted of proposed lapd to be leased from the Harbour Board be sent to the Board and a lease be prepared for a period of 21 years, with a right of renewal, at a nominal rental. It was also decided to invite tenders for carting shingle and pipe*-
