Accounts” amounting to*£42o 2s 3d were passed for payment at last night's meeting of the Borough Council. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Chrystall) and Crs. Hunt, Coley, Walker, Parkin, Bryant, and Pearson. The tickets for “Mind the Paint, Girl," are selling freely. The Committees of the various queen candidates will benefit pro rata, according to the number of tickets each committee sells. The Borough Council last night decided to order 300 tons each of Belmont 2-inch metal and screenings, and to invite tenders for the supply of 100 yards of metal from Robinson’s pit. Giving evidence in the alleged assault ease at the. local S.M. At the local police court yesterj day afternoon, before Messrs Hornblow and Perreau, J’s.P., an old man named George Alexander was charged by the police with vagrancy. Accused, who elected to be dealt with summarily, pleaded not guilty, and asked to be allowed to leave the town. Evidence was given by Constables Owen and O’Donoglme as to the accused’s habits. Accused was convicted and ordered to leave the town forthwith.
At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council a circular letter was read from the Foxton Harbour Board covering a statement of the savings in freight by steamer as against rail, and asking for the Council’s assistance in improving the trade of the port. —-It was decided, on the motion of Crs. Coley and Walker, that this Council extends its hearty co-operation to the Harbour Board in its endeavour to foster the trade to the port. On Saturday afternoon Cr. G. A, Monk (chairman of the Horowhenua County Council), accompanied by Crs. S. A. Broadbelt, C. L Darkness, H. G. Bryant, F. J. Ryder and the County Engineer (Mr W. N.‘ Anderson), visited the Shannon bridge over the Manawatu River.
