BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last night for the purpose of dealing with matters connected with the municipal gas works, and general. There were present: The Mayor (Mr John Chrystall), and Crs. Coley, Hunt, McMurray, Parkin, Pearson, Rand, Thompson and Walker. The gas works stoker was in attendance, and handed in a letter, stating that he intended to continue his work withdrawing his previous verbal notice.
A discussion on the various points at issue between the Council and stoker were gone into at length, and finally the Council resolved that the stoker should be asked to refract certain statements re hostility of two councillors, and that he should give an undertaking in writing that lie will continue his work as at present for a period of six months. A letter was read from the Westport Coal Company, stating that owing to the trouble \yith the waterside workers supplies of coal would be suspended, and it was resolved that in the meantime the street lamps be not lit. The Town Clerk reported that the coal in slock, with economy, would last for a period of about six weeks.
A list of persons in possession of unregistered dogs was submitted to the Council by the dog registrar, and the Town Clerk was instructed to issue summonses against owners forthwith.
The Mayor reported that he had made arrangements for the sinking of the artesian bores, and operations would be commenced, he hoped, some time next week. The contractors were Messrs Brown and Rasmussen, of Palmerston,N.
