OCTOBER, GRADING RETURNS.

The Department of Agriculture has issued (he following' return showing (he quantities of hemp, tow, and stripper-slips graded at the ports of (lie .Dominion during the month of October, 1920. Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was (5,377,' as compared with 8,534 for the corresponding mouth of. lust year, a decrease of 2.157 hales. For the 12 fnonths cuded 31st October, 1920, the number of bales graded was 9(1,948, as compared with 9(5,530 for the previous 12 months, an increase of -418 bales. Tow. —The total number of hales graded was 1,285, as compared with 2,324 for the same month last year, a decrease of 1,039 bales. For the .12 months ended 31st October, 1920, the number of bales graded was 21,023, as compared with 16,817 for the previous 12 months, an increase of 4,800 hales.

Stripper-Slips. —Dnripg the month 195 halos wore graded, as compared with nil for the same month last year. For the 12 months ended 31st October, 1020, the number of bales graded was 570, as compared with 152 bales for the previous 12 months, an increase of 424 bales. The following are the details of (he grading of hemp at Ihe different ports:—

Thirty-four bales at Picfbn were graded line, and two at Auckland, fourteen at Fox ton, and six at Wellington were rejected. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 1)02, Fox ton 1,985, Welling! on 2,000, Piet on 123, Blenheim 170, Bluff 379, Dunedin 5(5. The number of bales in cacti grade throughout the Dominion was as under, the totals for (he corresponding 'month - of' last year being given in parentheses; —Fine 34 (0), good fair 808 (1,022),' high fair 3,858 (5,495), fair 1.4(57 (1,900), common 128 (102), rejected 22 (15). Total, 0.377 (8,534). The following are the details of the tow graded;—
