BOOKMAKERS WARNED.
Wellington, October 30,
Replying to a question by Mr Jones in the House of Representatives this afternoon, the Minister for Justice said he had had the matter of bookmakers’ activities brought under his notice. He had had a number of betting cards sent to him, and lie said it appeared that bookmakers were openly defying the law, and so were those of the public who had bet with.them. He had consulted the Commissioner of Police on the matter, and had issued instructions that active steps must be taken to check betting. Not only would Ihe bookmaker’s be prosecuted,.but also those who bet with them, “We are alfeady on the tracks .of these people,’ 7 said the Minister, “and if they happen to find themselves in trouble it will be their own fault.”’
