SUGAR WORKERS STRIKE.

Auckland, August 15

The sugar workers at Chelsea came out on strike at midnight. A telegram was received from the President of the Board of Trade (Hon. E. P. Lee) yesterday, asking Hit men lo hold oil (be slrike pending a conference here on Tuesday, between the Sydney representatives of tho company, the chairman of the Board of Trade, and Hie Conciliation Commissioner (MrW. Newton). The union declined to agree, and al a meeting held this afternoon decided lo remain on strike until their demands arc satisfied. (The engineers and filters are still working.’ [The men’s chief demands are for a 44-hour week and a minimum weekly rate of £4 11s per man all round. The minimum al present is €’3 Us.]

Tho watersiders have refused to discharge 800 tons of coal at Chelsea sugar works in sympathy with the men on strike.
