THE ROAD HOG.
CAN A. BRAKE BE PUT ON THE SPEED MANIAC? ,
At Thursday's meeting til' (lie Oroua (,’unniy Council, Cr. McElroy drew the attention of members to recent tragedies due to high speed by motorists on our highways. He moved that (wo members of the Council tie associated \vith its engineer to secure by-laws, etc., from other local bodies with a view to getting such a regulation as will tend to reduce the dangers within Ihe Oroua county. In order to make bylaws effective it was essential to get the aid of the poliee. The speaker would like to see Ihe police(rap system of England—by whieii times were taken at each end of a highway—adopted out here. There should he some system of licensingdrivers, and on conviction and two endorsements a speed maniae should he prohibited from ever again driving a ear. Cr. Vincent liked the American system best, under which a convicted speed maniae was not only deprived of his license to drive but be was.not even allowed to ride in a motor cur. But as a matter of fact, the only effective way was to cut down the speed of the engines. It seemed that the wide)' the road (tie greater the danger—that conduced to speed danger. Cr. Morrison did not think by-laws would help much. The trouble with some of Ihe rood hogs was that “they would not take enough water with it.” The motion was adopted, ihe members of (lie committee being Crs. Pearce,McLennan and McEiroy,. with the engineer.—Advocate.
