CONDITION OF WOUNDED MAN
IMPROVING
So far no new developments concerning Saturday’s shouting sensation have occurred. CressAvell, the Avounded man, shows satisfactory progress, and it is believed that he now has a good chance of recovery. The police are very reticent, and refuse to give any particulars, but it is slated that the lavo men concerned had a big tight, and the police were telephoned for, and also that Mackay Avas in trouble. That message accounted for Constable "Wilson being so early on the scene. The cause of the supposed quarrel is still hidden in mvstei'A - .
About 15 years ago Mr Mackay was one of the masters at King’s College, a position he held for two or three years. Ho left teaching to lake up the law, and after leaving Auckland practised at Stratford pj'ior to going to Wanganui. When ho was in Auckland, yachting was one of his favourite pastimes. ■ Subsequent to the affair, Mr Mackay was completely broken up, and appeared to realise his position. What led up lo the offence remains a mystery so far as (he public is concerned, bill if is well known that Mr Maekay's health has been very ( seriously impaired as 1 lit* result of ! ' ! an accident lie met with last year, and lately he has been a mass of nerves, Jfe recently had a serious disagreement with the heads of the Returned Soldiers’ Association over liie Prince’s visit, and lie was subjected to much hostile criticism from I,hat quarter. A wa.ve of sympathy for the unfortunate man has swept over the town, and the correct story of the sad affair is now being awaited with great interest. —N.Z. Times.
