SIR JOSEPH WARD.
TO DEAL -WITH INCIDENTS OF lIIR DEFEAT. Invercargill,;'Jan. 22, Sir Joseph Ward and Lady Ward arrived by the through 'express tonight; and were met at.the station by a large gathering. Responding to the Mayor’s welcome, Sir .Joseph remarked that it was the first time for 33 years that he had come to Invercargill in a private capacity, but ho came just as happily in that .capacity,' and on the following night ho would speak at Winton, where he intended to deal with some incidents that had led to his' defeat at last election. It was due to himself not to let any one believe that the accusations put on foot were other than the work of those who considered that the end justified the means. He was never a revengeful man. Another feeling at that moment was that of a young man breasting a running tape, who did his best to finish first, hut was prepared to wish the other fellow the best of luck. He did not mind fighting or reverses, hut he did object to hitting below the bell. He would probably • have to leave the country for a short lime, ho continued, and later he would have to absent himself for a longer period, but he was not going to leave New Zealand. He was pleased at being a free man, and he would assure them that he was going to be much more influential out of Parliament than he was in it, even as Prime Minister.
