MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. Present. Crs. Sir J. G. Wilson H. 11. Hunt, J. Boyce, W. E. Barber, 11. G. Hammond, and W. *S. Penny. Leave of absence was granted to Or W. Phillips. CORRESPONDENCE.

From New Zealand Railways, furwarding paid-oh charges for the Sanson-Carnarvon tram , line at Longburn, £2117s 3d. —Received. Prom the Minister of Public Works, stating that he was obtaining a report on the question of a Government grant towards the cost of raising portion of the main road between Palmerston North and Wellington at Kangiotn. —Received. /

From Mr B. Newman, M.P., stating he had written to the Minister of Lands strongly urging that the Government should pay rates on the Fairfield and Makowhai settlements, and other soldier settlements.

From Mr G. Johnston, stating that the trustees of Johnston’s estate were unable to sell any of the Highden estate for the purpose of erecting a roadman’s cottage. From C, M, Ross Co., asking permission to erect a hoarding at Manawatu Heads.—Engineer to'report. From the County ranger, asking if the roads in the Sandon township were closed, and asking what steps he should take in regard to roadmen’s stock. —Until Mr Phillips’ return no ruling could be given. The ranger to he notified that an occasional visit must be made to Mr Barber’s riding, at least not less than twice a month.

From E. Oppatt, asking' that the roads in Sandon township he kept open for stock, as otherwise many people would not he able to milk, GENERAL. ]( was resolved that, as soon as the Alanawgtu Council Loan and Empowering Act became law, steps be taken to have a vote of the ratepayers under the Local Bodies' Loans Act to raise the amount authorised—Carried. The tramway manager’s report showed a debit balance of .646 Ss 4d. —Adopted. It was decided that the followingalt orations be made in the rate roll: —G. A. Field to W. F. Buxton, lots pi. 3,4, 5, sec. 84-5, Sandon; C. Jensen to lI.M. the King, lot 1, sec. 30, Carnarvon. IMBOUNDED STOCK.

A complaint was made in person by Mr F. Watkins against the ranger's present arrangement oi' taking local impounding cases to Palmerston Xorlh to be. heard. He said it was not fair to the ratepayers, and lie would ask for a ruling on the matter. —It was decided that in eases where those running stock on roads were summoned it was advisable that the ease should be tried at the nearest court, TRAMWAY ENGINES.

Cr. Hammond raised the point that the engines were overloaded and therefore the strain was damaging them and shortening the life of the engines. He said a maximum load must be laid down and under no conditions exceeded, and now that I her# would be two engines this should not be difficult to arrange.
