FISHER BEATEN BY 987 VOTES. LABOUR CELEBRATES VICTORY. London,' Sept. 12. The Whines by-election resulted: Air Arthur Henderson, 11,404Mr F. M. B. Fisher .. 10,417 Majority for Henderson 987 [The figures for the previous polling were: Colonel Hall-Walker (Unioriisl), 11,515; Mr T. Williamson (Labour) , 7,82.1; a majority of 3,094.] London, September 12. Mr Henderson’s victory caused a sensation at the Trades Union Congress, which immediately adjourned, (lie delegates singing, “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” London, 14th September. The newspapers agree that the Labourites are entitled lo claim the result of the 'Whines election as support of their demand for a withdrawal from Russia, and the nationaiisalion of mines. All welcome Mr Henderson’s return to the House of Commons, which the Daily Telegraph points out the December election robbed of too many whose abilities and influence would have greatly added to its authority. The Telegraph adds; “Whines has hitherto always been Conservative, hut the new franchise and re-arrangement of boundaries led to the belief that trade unionism was now predominant. . The Morning Post supports Mr Fisher’s protest against the lack of Government assistance, and (he refusal of an authoralive statement regarding the Russian Ambassadorship. These things practically gave the seat away. London, Septemb. 13. The Opposition newspapers agree that (he result indicates the growing revolt against a Government which has outlived its usefulness.
