INCREASE IN CONSUMPTION. A considerable increase, compared will) previous years, iu the importation of tea, is shown by the annual Parliamentary return of articles in common use. The total for 191 S was 9,403,207 lbs., which is equivalent to B.IG lbs. per head of the population. .The record is 9,938,017 lbs. , or 8.721b5. per head. The latter, however, yielded only £794 in duty, whereas last year the Customs collected £120,145 in duty on tea,,this being equal to 2s per bead. ■ The consumption of sugar, which is sliil free of duty, was 108,508,432 lbs., or 94.2 lbs. per head, compared with .121.2 ' lbs, per head in 1917. With the exception of 19.14, when only 95 lbs. per head was imported, the Dominion has used over 100 lbs. per head for many years, and never since 1898 has the consumption been so low as it was last year. The greater consumption of tea lias been accompanied by an allround reduction in the consumption of spirits, wines, ales, and beers.
