LAND SETTLEMENT.
PROVISION FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. A motion urging the Government to take the necessary steps to acquire or otherwise provide sufficient areas for educational purposes iu a.ll eases where closer settlement of any kind is in contemplation, caused some discussion at Tuesday’s conference of delegates from the school committees’ associations.
Mr J. K. Hornblow (Manawatu) made a strong plea for the provision of ample ground for educational purposes. Sir George Grey, he said, was the pioneer in this movement, and (he results following his Avise provision were most satisfactory. Grey town and Masterton had benefited from the unearned increment, and scholarships had been provided, also beautiful environment for the children. It avus the duty of the Government to make this provision. In connection with the national reserves, they must watch carefully and see that these lands Avere not touched or reduced. A member: They should bo increased.
Mr Hornblow said it should be laid down that all land put aside in connection with educational, hospital, and other purposes must not. be touched. Other members agreed that it was the duty of the Government to make this provision, and to preserve the areas set aside, A motion to that effect was carried. —N.Z. Times.
