NURSING RESERVE REPORT.

We have been handed the following report from the Secretary of the above for publication; — “In view of a possible recurrence of the dreadful epidemic of last year, a meeting of ladies was called some time ago, by Mr J. K. Hornblow, the local representative of the Palmerston North District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, to discuss ways and means of preparing to meet'same. At that meeting it was decided to form a Nursing Reserve, under the charge of Mrs Raine, a trained nurse, and for some years matron of the Masterton Hospital. The Reserve commenced its meetings on April Bth, and since then 12 lectures have been given, covering the following subjects: Hygiene of the sick-room, respiration, pulse, temperature, medicines, nursing of children, measles, diphtheria, treatment of epilepsy, etc., fevers, typhoid, rheumatic, influenza, scalds and bums, poisons and their antidotes, cookery for the sick, skin diseases, heart disease, and dietry in disease. At several of the lectures demonstrations were given. During the course, lectures were also given by Dr. Mandl and Sister Kilgour (who saw active service), matron of the Old People's Home, Awapuni, to whom the Reserve convey their thanks. At the first lecture there was an attendance of 32 ladies, and during the course the membership increased to 58. The average attendance for the whole course was 40. It is satisfactory to know that should we have another epidemic of extreme violence there is a band of helpers with a knowledge of nursing willing to help the community. Many have expressed regret that the lectures have come to an end, but in all probability further lectures will be given next Winter, The members of the Reserve wish to thank the local press for free press notices, the Borough Council for use of Council Chambers, Mr Harding for use of church and schoolroom, Mrs Davis for use of bandage roller, and Mrs Sexton for assistance given."
