SOCIAL AT MOUTOA.

After the many patriotic and “war” socials which have characterised the activities of the Moutoa and Marofiri people, it was pleasant to participate in a function which was free from the associations of wartime. On Friday evening last Mr and Mrs F. Shaw, of Moutoa, were entertained at a social prior to their departure from the district. The gathering was a most successful one, and despite the inclemency of the weather there was a very full representation of local residents. Progressive euchre served as the first portion of the evening’s entertainment, prizes being won by Mr E. Spring (gent’s), Miss K. Spring (ladies’). After the allotment of prizes a supper was served by ladies of the district. Reassembling in the schoolroom after refreshments, Mr and Mrs Shaw were presented with a very handsome souvenir consisting of a salad-bowl with servers, and a silver teapot. In handing over the gifts on behalf of the ’residents, Air Galland said that daring the years of their sojourn in Moutoa Air and Airs Shaw had endeared themselves to their neighbours by their keen interest in the social life of the district, by (lie very valuable assistance which they had given to' all efforts for patriotic and Avar funds, and last, imt: not least, by (lie influence of their uavu personalities. He extended the heartiest good wishes to the guests for all happiness in their new home.

Mr Shaw, in reply, thanked the donor.-' on behalf of himself and Ids wife, not less for the kindly expressions of feeling- than for the very handsome presents, which he could assure them would always he amongst their most'valued possessions. Any work which they had put into the manifold activities of Afoutoa would have been quite useless without the loyal co-operation of the other residents, and lids had, in every ca.se, been forthcoming. Whatever happiness was held by the future for Mrs Shaw and himself they must believe that the friendships formed during their stay in Moutoa-Marotiri would always be a pleasant remembrance. The remainder of the evening was occupied with games, etc., which, ending at 1.30 a.m., terminated an eminently successful function.
