HONOURING A HERO.
Hawcra, July 10. Many hundreds of people gathered shortly after midday to welcome Lieut. Laurent, V.C., the street fronting the station being packed with a dense crowd. The speakers were the Mayor and Major Cox (group commander), who gave a hearty welcome hack to Lieut. Laurent. The Citizens’ and Salvation Army bands were present, and many people carried Hags, while several buildings were beflagged. The whistles of the timber mills sounded after the speeches, and cheers were given for the honoured soldier. A procession was formed, headed by t-he Citizens’ Band, and proceeded to Lieut. Laurent’s home. On the platform was Lieut. Laurent’s grandfather, aged 94, and the crowd gave him an enthusiastic ovation, His grandmother was also present in a motor car. The crowd was (ho largest seen in Hawc-ra since the armistice was signed. Later, when Sergeant Grant, V.C., returns, both he and Lieut, Laurent will he made presentations by the citizens.
