FORTY-THREE CASES OF DIPHTHERIA.

The report of the District Health Inspector at the meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Thursday disclosed that there have been a large number of eases of diphtheria in the Board's district. Two eases of sleeping sickness, the first in the district, were also reported. The following eases of infections disease were notified: — Diphtheria 43, scarlet fever 1, tuberculosis I, encephalitis lethargical (sleeping sickness) 2, influenza .1, eerehro-spinal meningitis 1. The eases were distributed as follows: — Palmerston North, scarlet fever 1, diphtheria 17, sleeping sickness .1, influenza 1; Bedding, diphtheria 3; .Boxton, tuberculosis 1, e.s.ui. 1 (a eliild eight years old, death ensuing at the hospital); Bovin, sleeping >iekncss 1 (a child four years old, sent to Olnki Hospital); Bongolea, T. 8., diphtheria 7; Shannon, diphtheria 1; Manawatu, diphtheria S; Kairanga, diplilheria 5; Oroaa, diphtheria .1; Kiwitea, diphtheria 2, There were two deaths at the hospital of children sent there with diphtheria, one at Kimholton, an infant, and another at Bedding. At Bongolea and the immediate neighbourhood of the county there were many eases which might ho considered as the result of contact at the school which had been closed during the end of show week to have the school disinfected and the water tanks cleaned out. Of pupils attendin'* the school no fresh cases had been recorded. The total number of all infectious cases was 49.
