PEACE CELEBRATIONS.
LOCAL PROGRAMME ARRANGED.
Tim meeting of committees and the general public convoyed by (be Mayor and held in the Council Chamber hit night, to make final arrangements to carry out the peace celebrations programme locally, was well attended.
Tlif Mayor briefly outlined the programme originally derided upon, < r ind said tbat in view of; the season of i!io year some alteration in same would now be neeessarv.
It was pointed out that a scheme of improvements was under way at the racecourse, and it was doubtful if the buildings there would be available for use in connection with celebrations. If was decided to communicate with the Racing Club on this point, and if not available a large marquee is (o be erected in the centre of the course, in which to entertain returned soldiers at luncheon. The following programme was arranged : * SATURDAY. ‘ 9.1>() a.m., hells to ring and whis- ■ lies to blow in concert, full display of bunting, shops and dwellings decorated; 10 a.m,, procession to form at Triangle, including Bands, returned soldiers, veterans, Ride Club, Territorials, Scouts, School Cadets, members of local bodies and friendly societies, march to the racecourse; luncheon, to bo supplied free to returned soldiers, veterans, and friends; sports programme; monster bonfire and fireworks display from G. 30 to 8 p.m. on a site to be decided upon later. SUNDAY. It was decided to communicate with the various ministers, recommending that a united thanksgiving service be held. MONDAY. A monster children's picnic will be held in Victoria Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The children will be provided with free luncheon, but will be required to bring their own cups or mugs. Parents will be supplied with hot water and tea free of charge. There will be a distribution of fruit and sweets to the children, and games and a sports programme will occupy the time. In the evening a concert will be held in the Town Hall, to which admission will be free. GENERAL. It was stated that the cash in hand totalled £7B (is Od, and that with the Government subsidy the amount available would be £l5O 10s. The following allocation of funds was made; Fireworks £42, sports £25, concert and music £ls, entertaining soldiers £lO, children’s day £4O to £SO. Captain Goffin stated (hat the Scouts would be- prepared to arrange a large bonfire, and it was decided to allocate £5 for the provision of material for same. The various committees are to meet to make all the necessary arrangements for carrying out the different programines. A meeting of the Children’s Day Committee was held at the conclusion of the public meeting, when it was decided that Mr Perreau provide the refreshments necessary at a cost of £2O. Mi’ Kellow was authorised to purchase fruit and sweets to the value of £7, and same will he distributed under the supervision of Air Peter Robinson. Messrs Kellow, Furrie and Rider are lo purchase goods in Wellington for prizes for the games and sports, £ls to £2O being allotted for this purpose. The arranging of the games and sports to he left in the hands of the school staff.
