ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Auckland, July 3.
CapL A. Douval, of the N.Z, Army Ordnance Department, was found dead in the laboratory room at the works, the' cause being a bullet wound. He was the proof officer for the Defence Department at Auckland, it being bis duty to test ammunition. Deceased was aged 50 years, and leaves a wife, but no children. Levin, July 3. A young man, Joseph Rose, had a miraculous escape from death at Hokio beach through the explosion of a shotgun. With a companion, G. McDonald, Rose drove out from Levin, loading the gun en route on the chance of gelling a shot, putting the butt of the gun on the floor of the (rap, the muzzle loaning against his left shoulder. Descending a dip in the road, the occupants were thrown forward, and Rose’s foot came in contact with the hammer. The right barrel charge exploded. The clothing over the left breast was blown to shreds, the shot furrowing his chest and creating a large lacerated wound over the heart. The charge passed between Rose’s body and bis arm, and narrowly missed McDonald. The injured man was driven to Levin immediately for medical assistance, He is progressing well. Eltham, July 3, A terrible accident occurred at Wilkinson’s bone mill at midday. Win, Stunners, an old and respected resident, was caught in the machinery and horribly mangled. Death was instantaneous.,
