FLAXMILLS DISPUTE SETTLED.

MILLS COMMENCE WORK,

The dispute between the fiaxmillors and the employees on the wages question, which has been under discussion tor the past few weeks, lias now been settled, and the local flaxmills all commenced work this morning. It is expected that all the mills in the Manawatu will be in full swing next week.

The settlement was arrived at on Thursday afternoon, when Mr Torbitt, Inspector of Factories at Palmerston Norli, and Mr Moses Ayrton, Labour candidate for the Palmerston North, and Mr Moses, Ayring general election, met representatives of the Association and Union and an agreement was drawn up along the linos suggested by Messrs A. Seifert and R. T. Bell in a letter to the Union as follows; — ■ Dear Sir. —In consequence of the increased price of hemp now ruling, we agree to recommend the New Zealand Flaxmillers’ Association to reopen the mills on the following basis: —Day work, 1/9 per hour, 14s per day; automatic scutching, award rates; hand scutching, 30s per ton; cutting, 20 per cent, off last season’s rates; paddocking, with carting, 32s summer, 35s winter; paddoeking, without carting, 23s summer, 2Gs winter. Should anything arise necessitating a revision in wage rates, a month’s notice to be given on either side and a conference of both parties to be called immediately to deal with'any issues that may be involved. —Yours faithfully, ALFRED SEIFERT, Flaxmiller.
