CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce was 1 held last night. There were present: Mr M. E. Perreau (president), and Messrs Bryant, Hornblow, Nye, Funic, Healey, Christie, Whibley, Chrystall, and John Ross, and the secretary (Mr Moorhousc).
A letter was read from Die Ho-’ rowhenuu Fruit Growers’ Association, asking for the Chamber’s cooperation in an endeavour to take practical steps to meet the threatened timber famine. Messrs Perreau, Hornblow and Chrystall were appointed to attend a meeting to be held at Levin in this connection, on (he 20th instant.
The question of the curtailed railway service on the Foxton-Palmers-ton branch was discussed, and it was decided to write to the District Ti’aflic Manager, urging that one train a day be run instead of only four days per week, as proposed. The sand-drift question, in connection with which the Chamber has been working for some months, was further discussed, and it was resolved that Mr Hornblow be authorised to write to the Secretary of the Associated Chambers of Commerce with a view to having this matter dealt with at the conference at present sitting in Wellington. The matter of an extension of hours at the local telephone exchange was brought up, and it was decided to write to the Postmaster, asking that the 7 a.m. to 11 p.ni. service be observed, and also asking that the sing!® ring system of connections, as is in operation in other towns, be established.
