POLICE PAY INCREASED.

Wellington, April -I. The Hon. T. M. Wilford announces that Cabinet has approved of a. further increase in the pay of constables and sergeants of Is (id per day, while the scale for a permanent increti.se for all other officers is now being prepared for submission to Cabinet. The Cabinet Committee which reported on Mr Wilford's recommend-' at ions stated that it was necessary to increase the pay in order to maintain the strength of the force, which is now 800, as against 1,000 before the wtir. It wtis also necessary to grant the increases, as the war bonus ceased on March 31st. The house allowance for married .sergeants is also increased from £27 7s 6d per year to 15s per week. All increases take effect from Ist April.
