ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.

Dunedin, Yesterday

An unusual ease was outlined in the Police Court to-day, when Joseph French was charged with'obtaining £153 by false pretences. It was stated by (he police (hat the accused represented himself as a single man. and obtained various sums from a widow, under a promise of marriage. The alleged purposes for which Ihe money was obtained were for lawyers' expenses in connection with his mother’s fictitious death, the purchase, of a wedding cake, to repay borrowed money etc. The case was adjourned to enable witnesses for the defence to be called.
