THE GAS WORKS.

DECEMBER WO IvKINO. The amount of gas ''manufactured at the local gas works during the month of December was 478,200 ft., which, with the amount in the holder on December Ist, 10,000 ft., made a total of 494,200 ft. The amount sold to consumers for lighting was 172.200 ft., for cooking and heating 182,000 ft., and for power 74.200 ft., 15,000 ft. was used in the street lamps, 17,000 ft. at the works and manager’s house, and there was 15,000 ft. in the holder on January Ist, leaving 18,200 ft., representing 8 2-3 per cent, of the output, unaccounted for. Forty-one tons seventeen cwt. of coal was carbonised, yielding 11,420 ft. per ton. MANAfIER’S REPORT. The manager reported as follows: —The amount of gas manufactured for the month of December shows a considerable increase as against (lie previous mouth, which is very satisfactory when it is taken into consideration that the recent lire in Clyde St reel., has reduced the amount of gas sold by 22.000 ft. per month. Comparing the gas manufactured last month with the corresponding month of last year, there is an increase of 31.000 ft., and an increase in the amount sold of 50,800 ft. Commenting on Ihe consumption of gas for the year, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the early dosing of the hotels represents a loss of 12,500' ft., the tire at Whyte’s Hotel and Mont on Buildings 25,000 ft., and to finish the year with the Clyde Street tire, 22.000 ft. per month, making a total of 59,500 ft. per month, and talcing the average selling price, this represents 124 loss for gas sold as against the corresponding month of last year. The reason why the consumption is keeping up as against the above hard luck is that the consumers are making good use of the cooking gas, and (hat is what we have to look to for a steady consumption. I connected two new' cookers and cleared water from three services. The carbonising plant is working satisfactorily. The new oxide ground will soon be ready to be pul in use. 1 have to report that the stoker’s annual holiday is due. and 1 would recommend that the same arrangements as last year be made.
