THE BY-ELECTIONS.
LABOUR WINS WELLINGTON SOUTH. NATIONAL CANDIDATE’S VICTORY AT PALMERSTON. The by-election for the Palmers * ton North seat, .necessitated by the death of Mr D. Buick, resulted in a victory for Mr J. A. Nash, the nominee of the National Government. Mr Nash polled 315 votes more than his nearest opponent, Mr A. Galbraith (Labour). The details are; J. A. Nash (Nat. Gov.) 2229 A. Galbraith (L.) 1914 E. H. Cnibb 1119 A. Buchanan 191 . Total 5303 At the election held in 1914, the voting was: — Buick * 2844 Thorn 4735 Cralib 1540 Nash 4071 Informal 85 Total ■ 7281 More,than half the electors did not bother to go to the booths in the Wellington South election. Tho Labour candidate, Mr R. Semple, Avon Avitli 2,412 votes; Mr G. Frost (Independent) scored 1281, and Mr J. Castle (Independenl)397. The aggregate of the voles cast Avas 4,090 (less than half the number on the roll). At the election of 1914 the polling totalled 7,024, thus: —A. IT. Hindmarsb, 4,279; J. P. Luke, 3,004; R. B. Williams, 221.
