MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Wednesday. Present: — Crs Sir J. G. Wilson (chairman), W. J. Phillips, H. H. Hunt, W. E. Barber, W. S. Penny, M. Hammond, and J. Boyce. CORRESPONDENCE, From the Minister for Internal Affairs, asking for list of funeral monuments or other edifices erected in honour of any Frenchmen. From same, forwarding copy of Palmerston North-Kairanga River Board Commission. From the District Engineer, reporting upon the state of the tram line. From Waitomo County Council, forwarding resolution in favour of allowing native ratepayers to he represented on the Council. From Mr J. Chrystall, complaining of drains on the Main Drain' road.
From Mr A'. Anderson, assistant clerk to the Council, staling that he was due to go into cam]). From Mr H. J. Lancaster, complaining that he had been fined for permitting stock to wander, white other settlers were not molested. BUSINESS DONE. The following motions were agreed to; — That the action of the overseer in letting the carting and spreading of metal on' the southern end of the Whirokino road to H. Behrent at 10s fid per yard; the carting of metal on the same road between No. 2 Line and the Foxton Borough boundary to J. S. Snisted for 5s 3d per yard; and the carting of metal on Campion’s Line to J. S. Suisted for 4s fid per yard, be confirmed. Thai application be made to the Ministcrof Internal Affairs for permission to strike a uniform rate over the Oroua Downs Drainage District. THEA SUKER'S REPORT. The following riding accounts were in credit : —Waitohi £11)5 9s, Carnarvon £377 14s fid. Over expended: Sandon £242 ]os 4d, Mt. Stewart £278 18s 3d, Rongotea £166 15s Bd, Kawakawa £651 0s sd, Awahou £707 14s fid. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Awahou Riding.— During last month 1 had the Kari Kari, Bowe’s and Foxton Beach roads trimmed up with the road grader, and the worst holes have been repaired with metal along the Bench road. Metal has been carted, and holes filled in, along the Fnxion-Hhannou road, between Marotiri and the Foxton borough boundary. 1 have arranged with Mr 11. Behrent to cart and spread metal on the Whirokino road from the Main Drain to the Maimwatn bridge for the sum of 10s fid per yard, and from No. 2 Jane to the Foxton houndary to S. J, Suisted for (ho sum of os 3d per yard. Tramway.—Ext ra surfacemen have been employed on the tramline during the last month, and a large quantity of new material has been put in the line where most urgently required. Slock grazing on County Roads.— During the month of July, I took proceedings against 18 persons for having slock loitering and grazing on flic county roads, and obtained a conviction in each ease, the linos ranging from 2s to 60s, with costs. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT. The chief items of traffic were; Minerals 121.1 tons, merchandise 158 tons, metttl 690 cubic yards, timber 24,900 feet; fares amounted to £4 18s (id. The account shows a debit of £779 18s (id for the month, but included in the expenditure are the following items; Engine (first instalment) £SOO, freight on engine £72 16s lOd, sleepers £96 19s sd, rail fastenings £l3 Is. On the 24th ultimo the metal tram ran into a mob of cattle at the crossing near the Sandon school, and the engine was derailed. The brake gear Wits badly damaged, and has been sent away for repairs. The accident was caused by the cattle getting startled, and rushing into a gateway right in front of the engine. Two of them were killed. The locomotive recently purchased from the Railway Department came to band on the 27th ultimo. On the first occasion that the engine was used the water tank balance pipe blocked. On investigation it was found that) a large piece of pitch had been used to block a leak in the tank, and bad fallen down and blocked the balance pipe. The tank will require jo be repaired before the engine can bo used. I would recommend that a drill should be procured for the workshop; cost would be £l4 l()s. Daring the month 20 tons of 451 b. rails have been bough] at £22 per ton, c.i.f. Wellington, with the necessary fish-plates. The rails have been procured in Sydney, and delivery is expected within six weeks.
