ARBOR DAY.

At last night’s School Committee meeting the following reference to Arbor Day was made in the Head master’s report:—‘‘As Arbor Day will lie held during I lie month of .Inly, I shall he pleased to confer with the Committee with reference to planting work. If there is no development plan, I would advise the purchase of a few winter (lowering and autumn leaved shrubs for the side area in front of the school. A few cabbage palms for the front would add to the general effect. I have suggested to the Mayor that if the Council provides the trees, I will arrange for a srpiad from the senior boys to (ill the gaps in the streets where the trees have died out. This would form part of the Arbor Day programme, with the added advantage of leading the scholars to value their environment beyond the school gates. “I thinlc it would be a graceful act if we Avere to plant a tree in memory of ex-headmasters of the school now deceased. Names I can remember are the late Messrs C. Hulke, H. Woodham, and W. S. SteAvart. If we could arrange with an ex-scholar of each of these old masters to plant the trees, the little ceremony, would add another epoch to the traditions of the school.” The Committee endorsed the master’s actions, and instructed him to purchase any suitable trees and shrubs required.
