STATE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held last night. Present; —Messrs Hornhlow (chairman), Claris (secretary), W. Signal, E. Martin, Perreau, and the head master, Mr Fnrrie. Apologies for absence wore received froui Messrs Rev,. J. H. Bredin, Ingle, McMurrnv and Kellow.
The Chairman reported that Mr Martin had effected repairs to the fence along the old cemetery boundary, and he was accorded a vote of thanks for voluntarily carrying out the work.
It was reported that repairs had been carried out to-the zinc receptacle beneath the hand basins in the lavatory, hut owing to the rust it would be necessary to have the present replaced. It was decided to ask the Board to undertake this work, together with a request for new tanks.
Mr Signal reported that he had made enquiries re metal for concreting the assembly, and had ordered three trucks. He considered the Avork Avould not exceed £3O. Resoh r ed to leaA'e the matter in the hands of Mr Signal, Avilh poAver to net, and (hat lie he accorded a vote of (hanks for the attention he has already given the matter. A discussion look place re painting of the assembly hall. An estimate had been obtained for this Avork,and the head master reported that Mr Poavcll had consented to donate the net proceeds of a picture entertainment toAvards cost of same. The Chairman said the Avork should he undertaken by the Board out of maintenance. He had asked for the work to he done, and had been informed by the Chairman that no painting was to be undertaken until after the war. He read a list of schools in the district which had not been painted for years. He thought the only chance the Committee had of getting the work' done at once aauis to offer to pay portion of same. Mr Foreran said he Avould move in this direction.
Rfr Martin objected to the Committee finding any of the money for the work, for the reason that it should be done by the Board out of maintenance grant. Mr Signal also objected to the Committee bearing any of the ex-
pense. The head master said the work was necessary, and that (he outside environment of the school was more attractive than (he inside. ft was resolved to write to the Board, requesting that the interior of the assembly hall be painted. — Carried. Mr Perreau was accorded a vote of thanks for gift of an iron tank to be used as an incinerator in the school grounds. ' Accounts amounting to ,Cfi I ts (id were passed for payment.
Messrs Martin and McMnrray wore appointed visitors for (lie month.
The Board wrote, stating that Miss Bay, of Tasmania, had been appointed fourth assistant in plaee of Miss Priee resigned, and that the latter would eonlinne until Miss Bay' took up her duties.
Other minor matters were dismissed, and the meeting' rose.
