JUNE WORKING,

The ammount of gas manufactured during the month of June was 507,000 ft., which, with the amount in holder on June Ist, 13,500 ft., made a total of 580,500 ft. The amount sold to consumers for lighting was 222,900 ft., for cooking and heating 180,700 ft., for power 73,100 ft., 24,900 ft. was used in the .street lamps, 20,100 ft. at the works and manager's house,'and there was 15,800 ft. in the holder on July Ist, leaving 39,000 ft,, representing seven pei - cent, of the output, unaccounted for. Fifty-one tons four cw(. of coal was carbonised, yielding 11,000 ['(.• per ton.

MANAGER'S REPORT

The amount of gas manufactured for the month of June shows an increase in lighting and cooking, and a slight decrease in power gas. Yon will notice that the unaccounted for gas is a little higher than the previous mouth, the reason being that. I was unable to read ail the meters owing l to some of the consumers being away. The carbonising plant is working satisfactorily, with the exception of the purifier,- , as stated .i: my previous report, and working under the present conditions [ am unable to do outside work. At present I have five largo cooter.-, four small cookers, and iwo new consumers to fit up, also one street lamp, besides the usual consumers’ requirements. Prom June, 3914, to January, 1915, 2,0(13,100 ft. of gas was put through the purifiers, as compared with 3,728,900 ft. from Juno, 3917, to January, 1918; an increase in the latter period of 1,005,800 ft., so you can'see if the purifiers were overtaxed in January, 3 015, it is impossible ro get satisfactory results at present. I would recommend that 50 ft. of the creek tie piped and filled in, because the work would be permanent, and then the new purifiers could he fixed, and to get over the present trouble of extra oxide ground I would recommend that Cr Coley’s kind offer of use of section adjoining the works lie accepted..

Tho Mayor said that the Gas Committee had inspected life drain and found it Avould he a fairly expensive job to pipe it. The pipes alono would cost £1 per foot, and there would ho a A r ast amount of filling-in to lie done. In his opinion, they should consider the purchase of extra land adjoinihg the Avorks for the purpose. Cr Henderson said the new purifiers Avere badly needed. Working under existing conditions it was *no Avonder there Avere complaints about had gas.

Mr Baildon said he thought, the purchase of extra ground would be the Cheapest in the end. Under present conditions he had to put in the oxide before it was fit for use. On the motion of the Mayor-, seconded :by Cr Chrystall, the report was : adopted with the exception of that portion dealing Avith space required for purifying plant. ■ * , At a later stage in the evening the Council considered an offer made by Mrs K. ’Coley to sell 33ft. to the Council adjoining the works.

After consideration it Avas decided to make Mrs Coley a firm offer for the land, such offer to hold good for ten days.
