IRISH REPUBLICANS IN AUSTRALIA.
NUMBER OP ARRESTS MADE
SCHEME FOR DESPATCHING ARMEb VOLUNTEERS.
Melbourne, June. 20,
Mr W. A. Watt, acting-Federal Prime Minister, announced that, it has ..recently come, to the knowledge of the Government, that an Australian division of the Irish Republican Brotherhood had been formed here with the object of establishing aq Irish republic independent of Britain. Part of the plan was to enrol volunteers, who would be despatched to America, and thence to Ireland, to aid in an armed revolt. Tho organisation in America was in touch with Germany, and money for histile purposes was remitted from Australia. Members of this brotherhood had in certain cases been active forces in the Irish National Association, which was used as a cloak, without the knowledge of the bulk of the members of that association. The Government had determined to take decisive measures, and had arrested seven of the ringleaders, who were now interned.’ A public enquiry would be held.
THREE ARRESTS IN SYDNEY,
Sydney, June 20
Three members of the Irish National Association have been arrested by the military, and interned. Several homes were raided, and papers seized.
