HONOURING A HERO.

LIEUT. FRICKLETON, V.C

Wellington, June 15,

A civic reception was to-day accorded Lieut. S. Friekleton, V.C., of Blackball, West Coast. The proceedings were most enthusiastic. The concert chamber in- the Town Hall was crowded, and a large number were unable to obtain admittance. The speakers Avere the Mayor of Wellington, Sir James Allen, the Hons. G. W. Russell and W. D. S. MacDonald, and Colonel J. G. Hughes. The deed Avhich gained Lieut. Friekleton the coveted distinction is related in the Imperial Gazette as follows: “Although slightly Avounded, Lance-Corporal Samuel Friekelton dashed fonvard at the head of his section, pushed into our barrage, and personally destroyed with bombs an enemy machine gun and. crew, Avhich Avere causing heavy casualties. He then attacked a second gun, killing the Avhole of the crew of twehm. By the destruction of these two guns he undoubtedly saved his oavu and other units from very severe casualties, and his magnificent courage and gallantry ensured the capture of the objective. During the consolidation of the position ho received a second severe wound. He set throughout a great example of heroism.”
