YOUNG WIFE DESERTED.
DIVORCE PETITION GRANTED. A petition for divorce, brought by Vera Myrtle Jude against Cecil William Jude on the ground of desertion, was heard by Mr Justice Cooper at the Hamilton Supreme Court last week. The petitioner also asked for the custody of the one child of the marriage. The petitioner’s evidence was to the effect that she met the respondent at Foxton soon after she was 18 years of age. They were married on May 18th, 1911, at Wellington, and from Wellington they went to Pelorous Sound as married couple on a farm. After the child was born her husband deserted her, and she had not heard of him since. She had supported herself and the child since her husband left hei, and had done her utmost to discover her husband’s whereabouts, but without success. The petitioner said she could give no reason for her husband’s desertion.
A decree nisi was granted, to be made absolute at the. expiration of three months. The petitioner was given the custody of the child. His Honour stated that this was apparently another of those cases which came before him frequently, in which a young girl recklessly married a man of whom she knew practically nothing after a very short acquaintance. The husband was addicted to drink, and had led a wandering life, dually leaving his young wife and little baby to face the world alone.
