UP-RIVER PICNIC.

The picnic under the auspices of the Methodist Sunday school was held on Tuesday, in ideal weather. The teachers and scholars, together with a large number of parents and friends, laden with edibles, took their seats in the roomy punts, and after an hour’s run, were landed at a picturesque spot, under the shelter of the willows. The copper was boiled, and a hearty meal enjoyed. Most of the party went, over the hill to a large open space, where games and races were indulged in by all. Thc'Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) annexed the prize in the married men’s race. After tea a reluctant party returned to the punt for the return tiip, which proved very enjoyable. The river was like a lake, so calm. The picnicers indulged in snatches of songs, such as“Littlcßits of Sunshine,” “Smile, Smile, Smile/’ etc. Cheers were given for Mr Signal (to whose kindness the school is indebted for the outing), the ‘Skipper” (Willie Signal), the Superintendent (Mr 0. Huntley), and last (but not; least), onr boys at the front. “Anld Lang Syne” and “God Save Onr King” and “Our Splendid Men” was then sung, and the party landed, tired, but happy, eaeli one having seemed to outvie the other in trying to make the picnic what it was —a grand success. /’ '
