BIG FIRE AT CHRISTCHURCH.

CANTERBURY HALL DESTROYED. Christchurch, Nov. 11. A great tire occurred in the city to-night, when Canterbury Hall, comprising Fullers’ Vaudeville Theatre (His Majesty’s), the Canterbury Industrial Association, and the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Rooms, and Alexandra Hall were destroyed. The building was valued at £21,000 In His Majesty’s Theatre was the city organ, presented by the Government to the people of Christchurch after the 1906 Exhibition. It was valued at £5,000. The fire started in the dress circle of His Majesty’s Theatre. The origin of the fire is a mystery; but the caretaker, who was till round the building in the afternoon, inclines to the belief that it started upstairs or in the roof. The insurances on the Canterbury Hall are £12,000, including £I,OOO in companies on the furniture. The offices ‘’interested ars: The British Mercantile £4,000, Liverpool, London and Globe £3,000, the British and Dominion, Victoria, Imperial, New Zealand and Union companies £I,OOO. • It is probable that Fullers’ is separately insured, but the insurance is not available. They are also insured fully for rent in the National office.
