BAINESSE SCHOOL.

GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT'S BUNGLING. A school building at Bainesse, which has been in use for years, is too small for the 40 children‘who attend. Tor some time endeavours have been made to have some additions and improvements made to the building. But there are unusual difficulties in the way. The building is on land which is either a road or a railway reserve. That point, apparently, is not settled, though evidence available leans to support Jhe view that it is a road. The fanawatu County Council has done /its best to help the requirements of the school, and arranged to transfer the piece of land to'the Education Board, this step being asked for by the Board before improvements would be made. The Railway Department also agreed to the transfer of any interests it might have in the laud. It ivas necessary to insert a clause in the “Washing-Up Bill” to enable the transfer to be made, and Mr E, Newman, M.P., working in conjunction with Mr W. H. Field, M.P., took steps to have this done. But at the very last minute a hitch occurred which has delayed the transfer till next session. The Minister of Education wrote to Mr Newman, stating that the Wanganui Education Board had made no application to the Department for the establishment of a school at Bainesse, and for this reason the Lands Department was notified that the Education Department could not recommend the proposed legislation. It is evident, on this statement, (hat the Education Department is not aware that there is already a school a Bainesse, with 40 children in attendance, although it has been paying the salary of the teachers for years. Correspondence setting out this position was laid before the meeting of the Manawatu C.C. on Tuesday, when great disappointment was expressed at the delay, which it was seen was wholly due to the bungling of some officers in the Education Department.
