A DESERTER ARRESTED.
MEMBER OF CARROLL FAMILY. Francis Joseph Carroll, one of the three Carroll brothers who were called irp last June, but who subsequently disappeared, was arrested on October 9th, at Awanui, Kaitaia, in the extreme north of the Auckland province. He had taken an assumed name, and was passing himself off as an American citizen. The arrest was made by Constable Martin, of Kaitaia. Carroll was brought through to Palmerston North by the Auckland express yesterday morning, and handed over to the military authorities, by whom he will be dealt with. The ease of the Carroll brothers attracted more than usual attention some months ago, on account of the defiant attitude taken up by them when before the Appeal Board. Two were ordered into camp and another was given leave for a month or so. The first two disappeared, and the remaining brother was then ordered to camp, but prior to the date of his taking up military training, he, too, left for parts unknown. The arrest just made is the first that has been heard of the absentees since their disappearance.
