NEW MARINE LIFE-SAVING SUIT.
At Wellington on Sunday, Mr J. B. Clarkson, who has lately returned from a trip to England, gave an interesting exhibition of the use of a new marine life-saving suit which he purchased in New York prior to facing the submarine menace on the run across the Atlantic. Mr Clarkson donned the life-saving suit in his ordinary street attire, boots'and all, and then entered the water. He rested vertically, the water reaching” just up to his arm-pits, and then by slightly reclining back-. Avards, Avas able to propel himself av ith the use of his hands to the centre of the boat harbour. Mr Clarkson then smoked a.cigarette, and drank u glass of milk Avithout the slightest difficulty. The exposition occupied about 20 minutes. Mr Clarkson’s- suit Avas bought merely for personal use, and not as a commercial enterprise. It is constructed of pure rubber, and is .somewhat, similar in general appearance of a diver’s outfit, but Avithout the helmet, a Avaterproof rubber hood providing protection in the case of Mr Clarkson’s suit. The hands are encased, and in fact, the suit is a one-piece garment Avith a rubber band titling tightly around the neck. There is a - thin breastplate Avith Avater-tight pockets to carry enough provisions to sustain a man comfortably for (hree days. The suit is thickly padded throughout Avith avool and kapok, Avhich gives not only the buoyancy, but Avarmth enough to resist the coldest AA'ator. The invention Avill hold up one man and eight others. It is Aveightod Avith lead at the feet to keep the Avearer in a vertical position. In Ncav York they are sold for IM, and are in great demand as a result of the submarine peril.
